When to seek assessment
You should have specialist assessment if you have:
- A new diagnosis of Barrett's oesophagus and questions about what it means
- Surveillance gastroscopy that is due or overdue
- Long-standing reflux with risk factors such as age over 50, male sex or a family history
- Difficulty swallowing or weight loss alongside reflux
What is Barrett's oesophagus?
Acid reflux over many years can cause the normal lining of the lower oesophagus to change. Most people with Barrett's never develop cancer, but there is a small increased risk, so regular checks are recommended to find early changes when they are easily treated.
Surveillance gastroscopy
Surveillance involves a careful gastroscopy with high-definition imaging and biopsies at intervals based on the length of the Barrett's segment and biopsy results, in line with British Society of Gastroenterology guidance. Biopsy results usually take a few weeks to come back.
Insured and self-pay
Recognised by insurers including Bupa (Fee Assured), AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix, Allianz, Aetna International, The Exeter and Benenden Health. Self-pay patients are welcome — consultations are £215 and follow-ups £150, with any tests or endoscopy quoted separately in advance.
Frequently asked questions
How often do I need a gastroscopy?+
Usually every two to five years depending on the length of the Barrett's segment and biopsy findings. Dr Karunakaran will advise a plan that follows national guidance.
Can Barrett's oesophagus be reversed?+
Controlling reflux is important, but the lining change usually remains. If early abnormal changes are found, endoscopic treatment can be arranged.
