What to bring

To make the most of your consultation, please bring:

  • A list of your current medications and any allergies
  • Your GP referral letter, if you have one (not essential for self-pay)
  • Any recent blood tests, scans or endoscopy reports
  • Your insurer's authorisation number, if insured
  • A note of your symptoms, when they started and what helps or worsens them

Booking

Book online through The Oaks Hospital, email my secretary or call 07861 393237. Appointments are usually available within days. Insured patients should check cover and obtain an authorisation number from their insurer first.

The consultation

Your appointment lasts around 30 minutes. Dr Karunakaran will listen to your symptoms, review your history, examine you if needed and explain the likely causes. You will leave with a clear plan, which may include blood tests, scans or endoscopy.

Tests and endoscopy

If gastroscopy or colonoscopy is needed, it can usually be arranged quickly at The Oaks Hospital and is performed personally by Dr Karunakaran. You will receive written preparation instructions and a quote in advance if self-paying.

Costs

New consultations are £215 and follow-ups £150. Tests and procedures are quoted separately in advance. Recognised by insurers including Bupa (Fee Assured), AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix, Allianz, Aetna International, The Exeter and Benenden Health.

After your appointment

Dr Karunakaran writes to you and your GP with a summary and plan. Results are discussed at a follow-up appointment or by letter, and biopsy results usually take a few weeks to come back.
