When to seek assessment

You should have specialist assessment if you have:

  • Heartburn or reflux most days despite over-the-counter treatment
  • Needing acid-suppressing medication long-term
  • Difficulty or pain swallowing
  • Unintended weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Vomiting, anaemia or black stools
  • New indigestion over the age of 55

Common causes

Reflux happens when stomach acid rises into the oesophagus. It is linked to a hiatus hernia, weight, diet, alcohol, smoking and some medications. Long-standing reflux can lead to inflammation (oesophagitis) or Barrett's oesophagus.

What happens at your appointment

Dr Karunakaran will review your symptoms and medication and may arrange a gastroscopy to look at the oesophagus and stomach and take biopsies, including testing for H. pylori. Further tests such as pH monitoring can be arranged where needed. Treatment includes lifestyle advice, optimising medication and onward referral for surgery in selected cases.

Insured and self-pay

Recognised by insurers including Bupa (Fee Assured), AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix, Allianz, Aetna International, The Exeter and Benenden Health. Self-pay patients are welcome — consultations are £215 and follow-ups £150, with any tests or endoscopy quoted separately in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a gastroscopy for reflux?+

Not always. A gastroscopy is recommended if you have warning symptoms such as swallowing difficulty, weight loss or anaemia, if symptoms persist despite treatment, or if new indigestion starts over 55.

Is long-term acid medication safe?+

For most people it is safe when it is needed, but the dose and need should be reviewed regularly. Dr Karunakaran can advise on the lowest effective treatment.
